Goji Berry Powder 101

Just in case you’re new to goji berries, here’s a quick rundown:
Also known as wolfberries, goji berries are the bright red fruit of Lycium barbarum, a shrub that’s native to Asia. Smaller than a grape tomato and mildly sweet, goji berries have a unique earthy flavor with a subtle likeness to cherries, sweet raisins and summer berries.

Long used in traditional Chinese medicine and foods, these little berries are now being celebrated in Western cultures for their superfood potential. Energy, vitality and longevity are key benefits sought out by consumers, and these little berries have even been called “the fountain of youth.” How true are these claims? Read on to find out…

What Can Goji Berry Powder Do for Me?
Overall Wellness
Sunfood Goji Berry PowderIn one study, healthy adults who consumed the juice of goji berries for two weeks filled out questionnaires to track changes to their overall health. The results showed significantly increased ratings for energy levels, athletic performance, quality of sleep, ease of awakening, ability to focus on activities, mental acuity, calmness, and feelings of health, contentment, and happiness. Researchers concluded that goji “increases subjective feelings of general well-being, and improves neurologic/psychologic performance.”1

Antioxidant Rich
One study showed that healthy adults aged 55-72 experienced significantly increased antioxidant levels, leading researchers to conclude that goji berries “might help prevent or reduce free radical-related conditions.”2

Longevity
The legend of master Chinese herbalist Li Ching Yuen’s long life (rumored to be 256 years!)  was brought to light in 1933 when an Imperial Chinese government record was found from 1827 congratulating Li Ching-Yuen on his 150th birthday. Later, another letter was found congratulating him on his 200th birthday. What was his secret? In addition to his practice of Qigong, an ancient exercise of controlled breathing and movement, Yuen was said to have consumed goji berries and other Chinese herbs daily. Regardless of whether or not he truly lived this long, his commitment to nutrition and exercise are the cornerstones of his lore.

Anti-Aging
According to Dr. Earl Mindell, R.Ph., M.H., Ph.D., bestselling author of 50 books on healing and nutrition, goji berries contain polysaccharides (long-chain sugars) which are known to be “a powerful secretagogue, (a substance that stimulates the secretion of rejuvenative human growth hormone [HGH] by the pituitary gland.”3 Stimulating our bodies to produce HGH is essential for retaining youth because we naturally produce less and less, the older we get.

Eye Health
In one study, goji berries were found to increase antioxidant levels in the blood and protect elderly subjects from macular degeneration. Researchers concluded that consuming goji berries for 90 days increases “antioxidant levels as well as protects from hypopigmentation and soft drusen accumulation in the macula of elderly subjects.”4

Libido Booster
Gojis are well known to increase sex drive, and have been used all across Asia for centuries for this purpose. An ancient Chinese proverb says it all, warning men who travel far from their wives: “He who travels one thousand kilometers from home should not eat goji!”
