The King’s Nut
The Marula tree has served the people of Botswana, Namibia and South Africa with fruit and nuts as a nutritious food source since ancient times. The kernel of the Marula is on the smaller side, and is an excellent source of protein. It has a delightful, nutty taste, some say similar to a wild heirloom almond.
Other Uses of the Marula Tree
The Marula tree is not only a food source, in fact it has many, varied uses. Marula wood has been used to make canoes, bowls, drums, and mortars and pestles. The bark of the Marula tree is said to have medicinal properties for ailments such as intestinal disorders and insect bites. The essence of the leaves is used in Africa as an antiseptic remedy for burns and other similar skin ailments. Marula oil, made from the kernel, is often used in exotic skin care oils.
