spi•ru•lina: noun; blue-green algae of the genus Arthrospira, renowned for its nutrient value
crunchies: noun; small pieces or bits

Spirulina Crunchies™ are crunchy little bits of 100% pure spirulina. Spirulina is one of nature’s most perfect, nutrient rich foods and there has never been a more delicious way to get high quality nutrition into your body. Spirulina is a renowned source of protein, chlorophyll, trace minerals, vitamins, antioxidants and is also a world class immune system booster. Plus spirulina is known to protect against and detoxify radioactive particles and can help balance your body’s pH (alkalinity).

What is Spirulina?

Spirulina, Arthrospira platensis, is a fresh water micro-vegetable that gets its name from its microscopic spiral shape. Spirulina has been eaten by many cultures throughout history and if you could go back in time to visit the Aztecs you would find them using ropes to skim spirulina from the surface of lakes and ponds. They would then set the algae out to dry and make small, nourishing superfood cakes.

The benefits of spirulina range far and wide. Most notably spirulina is one of the best sources of protein in the world. Spirulina contains about 65% protein including all eight essential amino acids. Plus, the protein in spirulina is five times easier to digest than that of meat or soy.

Spirulina also contains an abundance of other nutrients such as, iron, vitamin E, beta-carotene, enzymes, omega 3′s and 6′s, DHA and a rare essential fatty acid called gamma linolenic acid (GLA). GLA is a powerful anti-inflammatory known to ease everything from joint pains such as arthritis to menstrual cramping. Spirulina is also a rich source of phycocyanins, the blue pigment which gives it its color. Phycocyanins are powerful anti-aging antioxidants that help defend our cells against free radical damage.

All together spirulina contains over 100 different vital nutrients and is one of nature’s richest and most complete sources of nutrition. But In the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, spirulina is more important than ever due its ability to help protect our bodies from radiation.

 Spirulina and Radiation Protection

Numerous studies have shown spirulina’s positive effects against radiation. Elements in spirulina can bind with radioactive particles and help to flush them out of the body while simultaneously boosting the immune system to further protect against damage. A 1993 study in Belarus on children affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster showed that in just 20 days taking five grams of spirulina per day resulted in a 50% reduction of Cesium-137 in their systems.

In 1995 a Russian patent was awarded for the use of spirulina to improve the immune systems of people contaminated by radiation. Further studies showed that consumption of spirulina reduced the radiation load of radioactive strontium and cesium ingested in contaminated foods. So now, with radiation levels in foods rising across parts of the US and Europe due to the Fukushima disaster, it is an important time to include more foods like spirulina in our diets.

How Spirulina Crunchies™ are Made

Our Spirulina Crunchies™ are grown in a pristine region of beautiful Costa Rica. The algae is raised in covered pools of pure, nutrient rich water where paddles keep the water moving in a circular motion to avoid stagnation. Each step of the process is carefully monitored to avoid contamination from impurities.

Once the desired amount of spirulina is reached in a pool, the water is poured across fine screens that separate the algae from the water. It is at this point that the process for Spirulina Crunchies™ becomes unique.Usually the algae would be dried at high temperatures and powdered or even spray dried. Instead, our spirulina is ground into a paste and is then pressed into little strands, like spaghetti.

The strands are then gently air-dried at low temperatures. It is this simple but revolutionary process that creates the extraordinary crunch and flavor of Spirulina Crunchies™.

How to use Spirulina Crunchies

It is rare to find a food that is so good for you AND good tasting. Spirulina Crunchies™ are crunchy and delicious. You can eat them right out of the bag or sprinkle them on salads or blend them into smoothies. Some kids that recently sampled Spirulina Crunchies™ here at Sunfood said they tasted “like chips”. Remember spirulina is a food, like lettuce or apples, not a supplement, so you can eat as much as you are comfortable with. The recommended amount is about 6-10 grams per day, which is about a teaspoon, but feel free to eat more to accelerate the benefits.

Spirulina Crunchies are 100% non-GMO and are grown and processed without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. Plus Spirulina Crunchies™ are rigorously tested to guarantee that they are free of pollutants such as pesticides and heavy metals and bacteria.
