Golden Incan Berries: How They Benefit Peru’s Communities and Economy

Imagine yourself a present-day farmer high in the Peruvian Andes Mountains, with crisp, clean air surrounding you. From your vista you can see in all directions for what seems like forever – no high rises, freeways, or electrical lines. Instead, you see the bright blue sky, other farmers in the distance, llamas, and wild plants waving in the breeze.

Now also imagine that you are not entirely sure of what to grow on your land. Most farmers in the area are growing corn or potatoes. But then a new opportunity presents itself. A Peruvian organization offers to teach you how to grow a food grown by your ancestors – one of the lost crops of the Incas – a traditional superfruit that your ancestors consumed often and revered as sacred. They promise to work together with you and Mother Nature to create a sustainable, conscious agricultural community.

Read on to find out more about this true story, and why Sunfood goldenberries are not only amazingly healthy – they are also helping support sustainable communities in Peru.

Golden Incan Berries: How They Benefit Peru's Communities and Economy

What are Golden Incan Berries?

Growing high in the Peruvian Andes is an amazing super fruit that is still relatively unknown in many parts of the world. The fruit is called Physalis peruviana, also known as the goldenberry or golden Incan berry. Goldenberries are one of the lost crops of the Incas and part of the small selection of foods they grew at the ancient mountain top citadel of Machu Picchu.

Golden Berries grow on a vine and are covered by a thin papery cape. The ripe fruit is the size of a large marble, with a rich golden yellow color. After the berries are picked and removed from their cape they are gently dried at low temperatures to preserve nutrients and keep vitamins and minerals intact.

Golden Incan berries are a nutritional powerhouse. They are packed with vitamin C, vitamin A, iron, niacin and phosphorous. They also contain pectin which supports healthy digestion, and can help lower cholesterol and prevent surges in blood glucose, making it a great snack for those with blood sugar sensitivities.

Goldenberries are also rich with bioflavonoids, also known as vitamin P, which studies have shown to demonstrate anti-sclerotic, anti-viral, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, antihistamine and antioxidant properties. In addition, they also contain about 16% protein, more than whole wheat!

The Sunfood Difference – How Incan Golden Berries Help Local Economies in Peru

Our certified organic goldenberries are grown high in the Andes by indigenous farmers. These farmers have partnered with a sustainable, organic Peruvian organization to form a community of farmers that is a win-win situation. Before this partnership began, these farmers were only growing potatoes and corn and were subject to the limited demands of the local economy. This placed them in a situation where it was difficult to support themselves in a sustainable way. Now, with the help of the organization, the union in the Andes of Peru consists of 80 different families, who now all work together with the same philosophy. Together, they produce an ancient crop that is now fair-trade, sustainable, and certified organic. The Sunfood Difference - How Incan Golden Berries Help Local Economies in Peru
