Chaparral: Powerful Desert Herb

The desert is a harsh environment; dry, barren, and hot. Over the ages plants living in these conditions have made incredible adaptations allowing them to not just survive, but thrive in desert climates. Sometimes a result of these adaptations is that certain desert plants end up with properties that can help those of us living in our own harsh conditions; i.e., the stress and pollution-filled environments of modern life. One such example is the desert herb chaparral.

What is Chaparral?

Chaparral (Larrea tridentate) is a hardy bush found in the deserts of western North America. Chaparral is an incredibly long-living plant. There are said to be colonies that are more than 10,000 years old. Also known as the creosote bush, chaparral has been used traditionally by Native Americans for hundreds of years for its strong antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties.

Benefits of Chaparral

Chaparral contains a potent compound called nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA). NDGA is a powerful antioxidant that can help protect cells against damage by free-radicals. Under the free-radical theory of aging, many believe NDGA to be a key factor in the extraordinarily long lifespan of the chaparral bush.

Chaparral is said to help improve the function of the adrenal glands by providing them with high levels of vitamin C. Vitamin C can also help to reduce inflammation in the body, improve stress responses, and boost the immune system.

Here are just a few more of chaparral's many qualities:

*Strong blood purifier, due to its high sulfur content
*Can help with arthritic pain and rheumatism
*Can help to reduce allergic and asthmatic symptoms
*Can help balance hormones for improved reproductive health
*Potent anti-aging properties
*Encourages hair growth and healthy skin
*May help to prevent cavities

The Sunfood Difference

Sunfood chaparral is wild-crafted and harvested directly from the high deserts of Mexico. The chaparral is dried using a unique low-temperature process which helps to maintain the leaves in a pure and unadulterated state.

How to Use Chaparral*

Chaparral is typically taken in a tea made with cold water. Boiling water can damage the nutrients and compounds in chaparral.

To make chaparral tea place about a half a cup of leaves in a quart jar and fill with room temperature water. Cover and let sit on counter overnight. Pour off tea in the morning and drink throughout the day. To make an even higher antioxidant drink, use this cold tea as a base for a smoothie, elixir or tonic made with raw cacao or other superfoods and superherbs.
