Description

Schizandra berries, sometimes spelled as schisandra, are the dried ripe fruit of Schizandra chinensis, a vine native to China. It has a long history of traditional use as a major tonic herb for the whole body, strengthening and toning many different organs with a special affinity for the liver. Its Chinese name is wu-wei-zi, which means five taste fruits. Schizandra has an usually sour, sweet, bitter, warm, and salty taste, hence the name "five taste". The herb is considered balanced by virtue of this distribution of flavors.

Schizandra is renowned as a beauty tonic and is considered to be a youth preserving herb. It has been used for centuries to make the skin soft, moist and radiant. It is also said to be a powerful tonic to the brain and mind, and is believed in China to help improve memory and strengthen eyesight.

Pharmacological research has been conducted since the 1950s, when it was reported to exhibit central nervous system stimulatory activity, enhance mental and physical capacities and improve cardiovascular function. These studies, mostly conducted in the former Soviet Union, characterize schizandra as an adaptogen and resulted in its popular use as a tonic.

A deficiency in one trace mineral, tin, may contribute to male pattern baldness. Schizandra is extraordinarily high in tin, and may be used to renew hair growth. Simply take 30 - 40 berries every day, either chewed slowly or prepared in an infusion.

Recommended Usage The adaptogenic propeties of schizandra may be enhanced by combining it with Goji Berries, Maca, or Reishi medicinal mushroom.

For use as a general tonic in China, patients are advised to chew dried schizandra berries daily for 100 days. Daily dosages of schizandra range from 1 to 6 grams. It is most frequently consumed in the form of an infusion.

To make an infusion, pour cup of berries into a 1 gallon container of dark fruit juice and allow it to soak for 1 day; strain and drink.

Add Goji Berries to the initial infusion for a healing tonic, used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years. Schizandra may also be added to tea decoctions and other herbal brews, prepared at a soft simmer. It works especially well with the immune-enhancing properties of the Amazonian superherb, Chuchuhuasi.

These little berries pack quite a punch. I use a tablespoon or two, usually in the evening, for their calming properties. They have a wide range of health benefits and the bags last a long time! (Posted on 4/2/13)
