Perhaps you already know that countless studies have linked the Standard American Diet (SAD) to conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Yes, eating plant-based foods is healthy for your body, but did you know that eating them is one of the best ways to protect the planet? Consider that cattle grazing is the number one reason that the Amazon rainforest is being destroyed and waste from factory farms pollutes our groundwater. If that’s not enough, in a report entitled “Livestock’s Long Shadow,” United Nations scientists calculated that livestock is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than all the transportation in the word combined.
John Robbins, author of Diet for a New America and Healthy at 100, said it well: “In a time when global warming and other environmental problems are so serious, it is heartening to realize that the same food choices that give you the healthiest body are also the most earth-friendly.”
