The Sunfood™ Story

Sunfood™ Superfoods was born out of a desire to reverse an alarming trend seen throughout America in the mid-90s.

Consuming dead, processed foods full of unnatural ingredients contributed to the amount of diseases, illnesses, obesity, and general poor-health of many people.

The result was a reliance on pharmaceuticals, surgery and western medicine that only suppressed the symptoms, instead of treating the underlying issue.

Two health-minded friends in Southern California decided they wanted to promote an alternate healing path.

Then, an interesting thought occurred… “Why were there other cultures from around the world, past and present, who had little to no health issues? What was their secret?”

So, the search began to uncover healing wisdom lost to modern society.

Traveling to South America to visit communities sustained by ancient traditions of using food as medicine opened their eyes and their minds.

It didn’t take long to find other cultures around the world that also use food to fight illness, increase longevity, boost immunity, increase energy, and benefit overall health.

The search for these exotic superfoods continues today, as Robert DeuPree (CEO) leads the charge to discover the foods and wisdom that help people heal and rejuvenate naturally.

At Sunfood™ we believe the secrets to health, energy and long life can be found in nature through diet and nutrition.

We believe Mother Nature has provided an abundance of diverse, nutritionally-rich plants that can be sustainably grown and harvested for the benefit of human-kind.

We believe in the restorative and healing power of superfoods.

It is our mission to share these superfoods with people seeking a truly natural solution to improve their health and well-being.

Along the way, we hope to open more minds to our beliefs by gathering and spreading knowledge on the science behind superfoods, and their wide-ranging health benefits.

Who We Are

Sunfood™ Superfoods is a family-run company based in San Diego, California, originally formed in 1995.

Since then we’ve grown in size from just a handful of people to almost 100 employees.

The Sunfood™ family is truly a family. Our employee roster has mothers and sons, fathers and daughters, husbands and wives, and lots of friends. The importance of community is part of our culture.

Our CEO, Robert DeuPree, leads our organization and is a true superfood fanatic. He eats more superfoods in one day than most of us do in a week.

Our 40,000 sqft. headquarters includes our on-site production facility where our products are stored, tested, blended, packed, and shipped with loving care.

We are a dedicated team with a big goal. We all believe in our mission, and we all feel so lucky that our job is to spread health and knowledge to the world.

Partner Farms

Our partner farms are located all over the globe, from South America to the Middle East to the Philippine Islands.

We believe in forging mutually beneficial, sustainable relationships that have a positive impact on local communities.

We are proud to have Fair-Trade agreements in place, and to work with organizations like the Nakwas Shea Butter Women Cooperative in Ghana, Africa, who provides our Shea Butter.

The Nakwas Women Coop was founded to enable the women in the area around Tamale and Mole National Park to generate income for their families by producing Shea butter for Nakwas Enterprise.

With the income produced by the purchase of Nakwas Shea butter these women are finally seeing some real improvement in their lives. Not only can they feed themselves and their children, but all of their children are now enrolled in school.

The first thing you’ll notice about Sunfood™ Superfoods is our quality. We secure the highest quality food from the highest quality farmers around the world, and put each batch through our internal quality assurance. Colors and flavors will vary, as will any organically farmed product, but we hold ourselves to an exceptionally high standard of acceptance.

Even our packaging is specially designed to keep our food fresher for longer. We don’t use basic plastic pouches, our pouches have a barrier that is 100% UV, moisture & oxygen proof. This means your superfoods will oxidizes much slower, and stay fresh and delicious for much longer.


We believe it’s our responsibility to ensure the farmers and communities we partner with are benefitting in the long-term. We want our farmers to scale with us, and to enrich the lives of the people in their local areas. As we grow, they will too.

Our Chief Operations Officer, Chad, visits our partner farms to see their operations and to offer guidance with his expertise. To witness these rural and often remote villages in person helps keep our mission in perspective.


Because the foods and products we sell come from distant lands and small farms unknown to most people, it’s also our duty to educate our customers. Sometimes it’s hard to even pronounce the names of these superfoods, let alone understand the health benefits.

We think a smart and savvy consumer is the best kind of customer. We want to help people understand why these superfoods are so amazing. Our packaging has details about each product, we have a huge archive of articles on our website, we create recipes and videos showing how to use superfoods, and our Customer Support team is available by phone, chat and email to answer questions.


Our aim is to foster a community of well-being experts, full of people who see that Mother Nature has provided us with an enormous array of resources to improve our health. Through our email list, social media, word of mouth and any way we can it’s our goal to expand and enrich the lives of people seeking natural health alternatives.
