Black-Owned Businesses & Black Creators We Love

Black-Owned Businesses & Black Creators We Love

Feb 16th 2022

Here at Sunfood, we recognize the contributions and achievements of Black Americans cannot be overstated. This Black History Month—and every month of the year—we’re celebrating a few of our favorite Black-owned brands and Black creators. From local restaurants to recipe creators to yoga teachers to pregnancy health care, we can’t get enough of what these brands and folks have to offer. If you're looking for more Black companies and creators to uplift, here are just a few we love.

Brands

Rollin Roots

This place is a gluten-free vegan oasis in the heart of San Diego, CA. From sandwiches and fried pickles to mouthwatering loaded fries and crispy potato flautas, the flavors of Rollin Roots will make your taste buds sing. Owner Avonte is truly a beacon of light in the local community. Even as a small business who has faced hardships of his own the past two years, Avonte occasionally offers pay-what-you-can to his Rollin Roots customers. His inspiring generosity and perseverance is obvious to anyone who meets him or enjoys his delicious food.

Head over to @rollinroots on Instagram to find out where and when you can roll up for a comforting meal.

Jakera & Co

Do you ever hear an idea so good that you wish you came up with it? That’s how we feel about Jakera & Co’s out-of-this-world oat butter. With flavors like Chocolate Chip and Cinnamon Maple Walnut, these oat butters will elevate a boring piece of bread to a 5 star breakfast with one spread of the butter knife. They’re the perfect combination of salty and sweet. Jakera & Co’s new artisanal collection of wholesome oat and nut spreads are plant-based and full of real-food ingredients we love. Owner Jakera’s love and passion for tasty food is clear with each bite.

Check out @jakeraandco on Instagram to find out where you can get your hands on one of these indulgent jars of goodness.

MylkDog

Here are three reasons why we love MylkDog:

  1. They’re a local San Diego business, just like Sunfood.
  2. Their cheeses only contain 11 ingredients and are dairy-free, soy-free, and gluten-free.
  3. The cheese is freaking delicious!

Owner Bethovan is a dedicated father, former sound engineer and music producer, and a positive force in the community. We love this quote from him: “Just like different instruments coming together to make a beautiful symphony. The ingredients of our natural vegan cheese come together to form a beautiful cheesy masterpiece.”

Follow @mylkdog on Instagram for the latest on where to find these creamy plant-based cheeses of your dreams.

Maya's Cookies

A local legend gone nationwide! Maya’s success is serious #inspo for all small businesses out there. Maya’s Cookies were already a local favorite here in San Diego before being rightfully recognized and celebrated all around the country in 2020. There’s a reason Maya’s Cookies is America’s # 1 Black-Owned Vegan Cookie Company – the cookies are bomb dot com! You haven’t lived until you’ve had one of their Chocolate Chip S’mores cookies (which has a gluten-free option).

This February, check out their Black History Collection which highlights different Black icons. Follow @mayascookiessandiego on Instagram for gourmet vegan sweetness.
